Continuing Education Updates 2008
Breaking News - November 17, 2008
Our courses were presented this past weekend, November 15 and 16, 2008 and were a great success. 21 people got credit for 8 hours and 1 person who still needed Ethics credit attended Sunday and completed their continuing education requirements. A few others attended who did not need credit but wanted the professional development experience.
All course credits have been entered into the TDLR Continuing Education Completion Reporting Site. Go to TDLR's Continuing Education Courses Look Up page and enter your License No. to check your current credits.
Important Information Regarding EPITA's TDLR Continuing Education Courses
EPITA's courses are open to the public, but primarily scheduled to meet the needs of the membership. The currently-approved courses were offered in November 2008. There are currently no plans to offer them again. New courses will be developed for 2009.

October 7, 2008 - Found out our courses had been approved. Updated the Continuing Education pages on the EPITA portal. Moved last year's course information to a new page.
September 26, 2008 - Courses approved by TDLR.
September 22, 2008 - 8 hours compiled. Application for two new 4-hour courses sent express mail to TDLR in Austin, including timed outlines, handouts, and certificates of completion.

September 18, 2008 - Information announced at monthly EPITA meeting concerning anticipated dates, times, location, fees and contents for courses.

August xx, 2008 - EPITA renewed by TDLR as a Licensed Court Interpreter Continuing Education Provider, No. 1338.

Presenter Bios
Jorge L. Dieppa, M.A., EPITA’s Continuing Education Coordinator and Professional Development Chair, is a Certified Federal Court Interpreter and has been a translator as well as a conference and court interpreter for over 30 years. Besides working full-time as Staff Interpreter for the El Paso Federal Courts, he is a Lecturer in UTEP’s Department of Languages & Linguistics where he has been teaching interpreting classes since 1989. Over the years he has been involved in training interpreters in OH, VA, CA, AZ, WA, and TX.
Esperanza Gallegos, B.A. in Linguistics, is a State (New Mexico) and Federally Certified Court Interpreter. Prior to her current employment as a staff interpreter with the Federal Court in El Paso, she was a freelance court and conference interpreter. She coordinated interpreting services for international organizations and corporations throughout the United States and Mexico on a contract basis, supplying simultaneous interpreting equipment for assignments ranging from small-scale business meetings to multi-interpreter conferences.
Rafaela G. Graffos, MEd., is a Certified Federal Court Interpreter and full-time Staff Interpreter for the El Paso Federal Courts. She was the first Coordinator for the Minnesota State Certification Program and was the trainer for its state-wide Interpreter Orientation Workshops as well as the judiciary workshops for judges and other users of interpreting services. She co-authored the Ethics portion of the Minnesota State Certification Test and coordinated the administration of the Certification Test. She has taught classes in the Interpretation/Translation Extension program at the University of Minnesota.
Frank Montalvo, United States District Judge, Western District of Texas - El Paso Division since August 8, 2003. Judge Montalvo was a state district judge in Bexar County, Texas (San Antonio area) for eight years and served as chairman of the Court Reporters Certification Board. He teaches at UTEP in the criminal justice program and is active in judicial training programs in South America.
Ana Trachter is a graduate of the University of Seville, Spain. She's a Texas Licensed, New Mexico Certified, and Federally Certified Court Interpreter. Ms. Trachter is currently a contract interpreter for the Texas Workforce Commission, and a freelance translator. Since 2004, she has been an instructor, exam proctor, and evaluator for the New Mexico Court Interpreter Program. For the past seven years, she has served as EPITA’s Public Relations Committee Chair.
Antonio T. Yáñez, M.A. in Spanish, UTEP 1974, is a Certified Federal Court Interpreter currently working as a staff interpreter for the Federal Public Defender Office, District of New Mexico, Las Cruces, NM. Prior to his current employment worked 8 years as a free-lance court interpreter for the District of New Mexico and the Western District of Texas. Mr. Yáñez retired as a high school teacher of Spanish after 26 years in the public schools of New Mexico and California. Mr. Yáñez is an instructor for the New Mexico State Certification Program for court interpreting and has participated as a rater for the Federal Court Interpreter Oral Examination of court interpreter candidates.
